Uh-Oh Moment In Strategic Communication



For this week’s oral presentation, being the social media lover that I am, I chose to discuss the twitter hack of Burger King in February 2013.  While it was made to look as if someone from McDonald’s team was the culprit behind the stunt with the jokes and funny images that were tweeted, the hackers were actually a group of young people looking to draw attention and a buzz to their underground music. It wasn’t the worst social media account hacking we have seen over the last couple years and luckily no major damage was done to Burger King’s reputation. Burger King jokingly made light of the situation and the incident actually gained the account more than 30,000 followers. Great way to handle an Uh-Oh social media crisis! I used Habermas’s Theory of Communicative Action and COPR model for my analysis of this incident. I have listed my oral presentation in a Soundcloud file below.

Book Review of Engage! The Complete Guide for Brands and Businesses to Build, Cultivate, and Measure Success in the New Web by Brian Solis


For my first blog post of my new class: Comm 613, we were asked to do a book review from a predetermined book list. I chose the book Engage! by Brian Solis because I’m very interested in the social media industry and the foreword from Ashton Kutcher made the book seem like a good, fun read. It was a great book that detailed the basics of social media as well as a guide to teach businesses how to market and and develop their companies using the social media technology.
